The topic of whether to use coolant / anti-freeze or water in your car’s cooling system is one that has been around a long time and will not cease until cars will no longer need any of it. The fact is pure water is highly corrosive, so it will degrade parts in the cooling system of the car such as the water pump and water lines resulting in costly and unplanned repairs.
Modern engine coolants contain a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant with corrosion inhibitors to reduce engine wear and to prevent the water from boiling. When water boils in a car’s engine it can no longer cool it, so this will lead to overheating and a possibly broken engine.
When purchasing engine coolant check if it’s a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Also check if it contains corrosion inhibitors. Be sure to check the distance or time intervals the coolant needs to be changed. Your car and your wallet will thank you.
